More About This Recipe

  • Crank up the heat, broiled grapefruit is where it’s at! I grew up in a family that loved grapefruit. Make that – LOVED grapefruit. Every winter our church would host a fruit sale, and we would order boxes upon boxes of fresh grapefruit. Once our shipment arrived, I would come down to breakfast every morning to find half a grapefruit sitting on the table for me, already sectioned by my dad. (I know, I hardly appreciated it at the time. Now I know that made grapefruit all the better!) As an adult, my grapefruit love has continued. But one of my favorite ways to prepare it now is super quick and delicious – broiled! It literally could not be easier. Just sprinkle your grapefruit halves with a pinch of sugar, pop them under the broiler until they are warm and the sugar begins to caramelize, and then a delicious treat is yours to enjoy. Broiled grapefruit is fabulous plain, but I also really enjoy it dipped in Greek yogurt, served up in a cocktail, or topping a salad. It's super easy to broil a grapefruit. Start with a ripe grapefruit or two. Cut them in half, and then sprinkle a pinch of sugar across the top of each half. Pop them under the broiler on low for about 5-10 minutes, or until the tops begin to burst and the edges turn slightly golden. Keep a close eye on these while baking. The edges can burn quickly! Then pull out the delicious warm grapefruit with that caramelized sugar and dive in!!!
