Homemade burgers topped with mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, and blue cheese crumbles. The perfect 4th of July burger!

More About This Recipe

  • Is there anything more American than a big, juicy burger? I’m not sure there is – except maybe a burger with various patriotic decorations sprinkled around it. My goal with this recipe was to make the perfect hamburger for the 4th of July, which is right around the corner. The red white and blue burger is not only made from scratch and delicious, but it has three fun toppings, each one representing a color of the flag! Of course, step one to making any good burger, in my opinion, is to make your own patties with a good quality ground beef. I like to use a ground beef that is at least 15% fat, but 20% is even better. If you get any leaner than that, your burger will be a bit on the dry side. Besides the burgers, the only thing you need to prep for these guys is the roasted red peppers. You can certainly buy roasted red peppers in a jar if you’re in a rush. Serve these bad boys on toasted buns. That’s the only way to do it! There’s so much flavor on these guys that I didn’t even think they needed ketchup or mustard, but feel free to add those if that’s your style. You should definitely try out these burgers for 4th of July!

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef, I like 85% lean/15% fat
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 2 red peppers, roasted and peeled
  • 4 oz blue cheese crumbles
  • Salt and Pepper

Instructions

  • Step
    1
For roasted red peppers, place peppers on grill over over gas burner on high for about five minutes, turning occasionally until the pepper skin is very charred. Remove peppers and place in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let steam for ten minutes.
  • Step
    2
Remove peppers and peel off skin. It should come off pretty easily and it's okay if some skin is left on. Slice stems off of peppers and remove seeds, then slice.
  • Step
    3
Form burgers into quarter pound rounds and make a small indent in each burger with your thumb. Season well with salt and pepper.
  • Step
    4
Grill burgers over high heat for 3-4 minutes. Flip burgers, cook for another 2 minutes or so and then add a slice of fresh mozzarella to each burger.
  • Step
    5
Close the lid on the grill to help the cheese melt. Let cheese melt for a minute, then add pepper slices and blue cheese. Cook for another minute. That should leave you with about a medium burger. Cook longer if you want your burger more done.
  • Step
    6
Serve burger on a toasted bun. I don't think the burger needs ketchup or mustard, but feel free to add those to your taste!
